Day 5–Superintendents, Reception, West Point Military Academy, West Point , NY

on Thursday, May 21, 2015

We begin our three days of events at West Point starting  with the Superintendents'  reception at his home at West Point. Before entering the base we had to provide ID’s and have both our trunk and under the hood examined by the MP’s.

We arranged to meet Ted and his family at a designated point. Interestingly we came in a different gate so the landmarks were unrecognizable. He caught up with us and helped us find a parking space. We walked from the parking lot through the campus grounds and were very impressed with the beautiful buildings.

We were so very happy to meet Gulizar’s family from Turkey – beautiful Mom Zeynep, brother Ibrahim and sister-in-law Nurhan and of course the guest of honor –our beautiful niece Leyla. Also, can’t forget Leyla’s boyfriend Noah who graduated from West Point last year and is now aviator training.

After taking in the views from the top of the library we noticed that the line to the Superintendents’ home was quite long.

Leyla, looked at that line and made an executive decision NOT to attend the reception. She  did not see the point in standing in line for 2 hours for a handshake. We all agreed and decided to tour the grounds instead.

We then went to the Visitor Center and toured the Museum.

Later we went to Haverstraw to spend time with the family at the condo that Ted rented for the week. Gulizar and her family whipped up an incredible meal like  precision chefs. And it was delicious.

Despite the fact that Gulizar’s family doesn’t speak English or us Kurdish or Turkish we managed to communicate and have a great time. It was a wonderful day with the family.
